Lostlongboards will be bringing cameras and some schwag, Shane!! Do you have the location figured out, cuz I have a GREAT location in mind!
Course is already set, and there has been a slight change of plans.
The race will START in Mercer Island, take the bike path across the I-90 bridge, up to beacon hill, then turn around and head back to Mercer Island going the same way. There is a lot of downhill, but that means also there will be some uphill.
Thats the jist of it, more details to come later.
Spread the word and make sure people know that we are using a BIKE/MULTI-USE path and we need to be smart if this is going to work. That means no passing around corners, giving bikers the right away, checking behind you a lot to make sure your not cutting anybody off, etc.......
OOoh shoot theres an actual thread not about volunteers. so shane i posted this question on the volunteeres needed thread but im gonna ask again on this thread cuz im retarded. I have inexperienced skater girlfriends/friends and im wondering how fast and hard the downhill section will be? im assuming the downhill section isnt acutally "downhill" but down a hill/slope.
Not sure. You might be alright, but I wouldn't risk it. Cause if they dont make it, there's a good chance your board is going in the drink. Now early grabbing on the other hand........
Its nothing hardcore, but there is one spot where you can probably get around 20 MPH only if your tucking and pushing as fast as you can. But if you can carve/ footbreak/airbreak you should be okay. I do recommend that people have foot breaking skills though.
The course is approximately 7 miles long. Nothing too hard.
The expansion gaps are GNARLY! I will announce this at the start to make sure it is very clear, YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK HITTING THE EXPANSION GAPS. My advise is to footbreak when you see them (I will try to have them marked with chalk as long as its dry) and let your board roll over them without you on it. Seriously, these things are wheel swallower and will make you crash if you try and skate over them. You could also try early grabbing or ollie'n over them if you have a kicktail.
Just remember. If you lose control of your board on the bridge (which you shouldn't), your board has a pretty decent chance of drownding in Lake Washington.
Are there any decent but cheap hotels near the Park on the Lid? I'm tempted to come up from Portland but would have to do it the night before. I'm guessing if I wanted video footage, the expansion bridge would be the place to get it? Boarders mom here btw... were you guys at Salem Slalom and I missed you?
hey Shaner! Stoked to see the first race of many in Seattle! I'll be coming up for sure...you guys thinking of sessioning something after? Should I bring my pads? leathers? Totally ready to skate Seattle!
Def' bring your pads! I was planning on heading over to Interlaken to skate after the race, there's also a short little corner spot right at the finish line. Maybe bring your leathers if you want to go hit Holmes point drive too.

rode my shortboard on 55's from studio7 to becon hill to the ballard bowl to fremont last night with a full backpack n smokin cigg's most of the way, this'll be a cakewalk... haha. chris: choked on my beer from laughing picturing that.... heh
For sure going, this looks like alot of fun. just wish i had a drop deck tho. I am short, so I have to bend my leg down really far to push. does it count if I run with a board in my hand? :)
Front page has most of that info. Race starts at 9:00 SHARP! and sign up/riders meeting starts at 8:30 or earlier. If your not there by nine,, your gonna be left in the dust. You'll want to hear the riders meeting also. If not everyone is back by 11:00, we will start the awards/raffle then.
100+? Where'd you hear that? That'd be cool for the race, but too many for Interlaken or Holmes.
Alright, got some stuff ironed out tonight and decided on how the start line is gonna work. There will be two start lines, both funneling into the same path. One start line will be for those who are in it to win it (bring your slide gloves :), and the other one will be for those who just want to chill.
Both of those options are totally cool, by the way.
And just to emphasize it more, make sure you know how to footbreak. this is a push race, but there are some hills and intersecions. We will try and make them as safe as possible, but knowing how to stop is a must!
That being said, this is gonna be a seriously fun time! After the awards and prizes, there are some fun corners to sesh right at the finish line. But we have to have a spotter to skate most of them.
the sun yesterday enticed my bare feet to rock the G.lake on my carvy dancer. It was a blast but i was sun dumbed.....meaning...i was not thinkin ahead.. this morning my push foot is raw..DUH! needless to say, ill be takin it easy tomorrow.
COMPLETELY SAVAGE EPIC DAY SHANER! today was kick ass, thanks to everyone that took pictures and filmed that sick drift session sfter that race too! and dennis that straight bomb scared the shit out of me at first haha! super sick guys! you all have to come down to tacoma to chambers bay it'll knock your socks off! thanks to everyone that helped make today SICK! peace. --code
yes. indeed a great race! i had so much fun. too bad poor tad lost his board. thanks again shane. you did a great job and put together an outstanding race, epecially considering how quickly you made it all come together.
i'll have misty get those pics edited and sent your way soon, shane. or i'll just post them in the gallery. she got a lot of good shots of the first 10 or so finishers.
that would have to have been the best time i have ever had skating. That corner was deffintly a sick one, I want to see those pictures and vids posted up!! After the kick ass day of skating me and a bunch of other people went skating interlaken, which also was epic. It was great seeing and meeting a bunch of new faces, i have a feeling i will skate with you guys again. THANK YOU SHANE!! you put together a great race and was totally awesome
Thanks to Shane and volunteers and sponsors for putting on this event.
I think I found out about it yesterday (or the day before) from James.
Very inspired by James' pursuit of long distance and 24 hour riding. I enjoy trying to push the envelope. This race and ride was like the 3rd time I had been on a board for any time in over 25 years!!! But I loved it.
I had to take the downhills VERY conservatively because the shoes I had on (Vibram FiveFingers) are paper thin and not great for foot braking. It also turns out I rode the board James let me borrow...backwards!!! Felt a little odd. Oh well. Still made 8th place. Not bad for an old fart like me.
My quads were burning during that race. I definitely need to learn to push with either leg.
Look forward to seeing any photos, especially showing my FiveFinger shoes. I want to send them to the company and suggest they do something about making a skate shoe. I really do think that a lot of flexibility in the foot is good for balance and helps make the foot strong...do what it does best. I really am not a fan of these huge, heavy shoe-boats that are the rage for most skaters these days...at least for pushing on flat surfaces and pumping.
I have a lot to learn about skating these days. I have never seen so many DIFFERENT kinds of boards and wheels and trucks!!! Too much for my old-man head to take in all at once. Some sort of skateboard renaissance seems to be happening.
The downhill and slalom era came and went pretty quickly in my day (mid to late 70s). We got a taste for pools and the world changed and I've got scars and brain damage to prove it...we didn't wear helmets much...
So, thanks again. Hope to be out there riding for 24 hours next month and see if I can break 100 miles or more.
Awesome job putting that together Shane, for the first push race in Seattle you can tell that shit is going to do nothing but get bigger exponentially! I was stoked to see Ted there kicking ass too, a little getting comfortable on the downhill and he probably will be smoking everyone! Let me know if Vibram ever does any more thrash-friendly shoes, those would be way fun to skate park with and try to make the transition back to the days of having feet that could handle running around barefoot all the time.
I just got back into Portland so I'll start uploading the video I got and throwing it together as soon as I can.
Shaner, THANK YOU!! That was arguably the best day of skating I've had in a while! The weather turned just in the nick of time, and the course was challenging! The corner session was sick, that downhill straight was wicked fast, and Interlaken bomb/slide session was the icing on the cake!
Can't wait to see some photos! If you got 'em, post!
probably the greatest thing to do once u get off grounding i have to say had a blast, got a bunch of rash(thanks to interlaken) got me a new board!!! woot woot go roe racing!!! ha ha but ya thanks shane and all sponcerships for setting up this amazing event!!!! there was a slide sesch after we left??? dam wish i dident have work still beat up though....
THANKS! To everyone that came out to ride and have a good time, you guys made the event what it was.
And a HUGE thanks to my wife, Jenn, who did a ton of work with the city getting permits and also getting people signed up and keeping track of what place they came in!
Ted! It was rad to see you out skating! With all that running background its easy to see how well it translates to a skateboard! I can def' see you doing really well in long distance events.
Thanks to those who took photos and videos and for posting them. I had such a good time skating corners and Interlaken afterwards too. Cant wait to see those pictures.
Hahah ok well cause i was tht tenth one. So i was just wondering if i did happen to make the top ten cause on the sheet i was put as like 12 but there were some kids numbers above mine tht finished after me so i was just wonderin
dam that interlaken railgard!!! lol that looked alot worse then what happend nice job on the vid though i like it looks great sweet sliding at that turn
What a day, took me some time to get everything feeling normal again. Well shane congrats on a killer event awsome turn out and a really sick day of skating that follwed. i liked it. good seeing all you guys and thanks to the portland crew for coming!
Sorry guys. Been really busy this month with Ditch slap, then the pusher, then Danger bay. Got a little time to relax so I will get them up. But realize they arent going to be very accurate. There was a lot of confusion when people would come in and not have their numbers visible right away, especially if a couple people came in at once. Next year I will make it more clear that everyones numbers need to be visible.
I thought that as well shane. that is why it has me thinking that anyone that has video from the finish line of everyone should post links and then there couls be the basis of where people came in but you could take a closer look with the video if you wanted to find out for sure.
