First, let me preface this by saying I'm not the kind of person to try and hype stuff up or sell you on something. Just the opposite, I try and tell it how it is and this review is no exception. I got the proto Firefly from Steve on Monday. The thing just looks fast! Black hole black with a mirror finish. 3 layers of Carbon Nanotech Pre-Preg, a 1/4" of baltic Birch, with another 3 layers of Nano. Total the board is 5/16" thick! Thats a little thicker than the average number 2 pencil! Also this is the new 3/4" concave, 1/4" rocker mold. This board has some minor cosmetic flaws that only Steve would notice. There some super small bubbles in the resin between the birch and the Nano and a small sliver. Both problems have already been resolved and they don't affect this board anyways. So I got home and immediately started to disassemble my 1/2" birch/glass Firefly right after I rode it one last time for comparisons sake. Once I got it all assembled I stood on it to see how the flex was. At the 31" wheelbase setting the board has no sag under my weight. There is the slightest flex, but its a different flex than I'm used to with other types of boards. It will flex to a ceartain point and then "bottom out"; basically the flex just stops at a certain point. At this point I was a bit skeptical since my other Firefly was rock solid with NO FLEX. Oh yeah, the CONCAVE FELT RAD! A big improvement from the last mold. Onto the antique yet very trustworthy Chatillon scale (I calibrated too). Last version of the Birch/Fiberglass Firefly, 1/2" thick, SUPER stiff; weighed in at 6 1/4 lbs! What a beast! Newest Nano Prototype with 42 degree Randal baseplate in front, 35 degree Randal baseplate rear with 180 hangers all around, Bone Swiss Bearings, and Orangatang Purple In Heats..................................... 8 1/4 LBS TOTAL!!!!!! Just 2 more lbs than the old deck ALONE! Okay, so this is all great info, but not good enough. I still hadn't ridden the thing. So today at work the board just sat in my car, catching my eye every time I walked by it. Lunch time came around and I jetted of and found a rad corner by Cougar Mtn Rd and threw myself down it (proper safety gear donned, of course). I was sessioning a steep, fast and rough wide right hand 180 hairpin. First thing I noticed, the concave gripped my feet and somehow my trucks seemed to be way more responsive. Weird since I didn't change a thing since they where on my old Firefly. I can only attribute that to the flex characteristics, concave, and the material of the board. Second thing I noticed was how smooth it felt! This is a pretty rough road and normally it seems to make the turn a lot driftier than it is, but the Nano board seemed to soak up and dampen the jitters and make it feel way smoother. Also this was with harder wheels at 83a, compared to the 80a I was previously riding on this road. But with a 1/2hr lunch I had to get back. When I got home I took some quick runs down the smooth short hill outside my house. Got it up around 30 Mph in a straight line tuck. I felt a lot more comfortable in my tuck with the better cave' and it was stable as my last board. I didn't notice any flex while straight lining and hitting the occasional bump or manhole cover. Felt solid. Not a ton of riding time, but first ride has proven to me that it is a huge step forward from the Birch/glass lay up of the last Firefly. Pros: -Light! Easier to push, carry and footbreak. -Low. My feet are a mere 5/16" from the trucks. That makes it the same as the older fireflys (maybe now referred to as "Insect Classic". Nice ring eh?) that have the "truck wells" on the bottom. -Responsive. The material just makes your board feel so much quicker turning! -Concave. About time I say, haha! huge leap from the last mold. -Dampening - hammered out the rough road no problem (I also had 1/8" gummy risers) Cons -Had to tighten my trucks a little. This isnt really a bad thing, but just thought I'd note I had to tune my trucks a little different to fit this board compared to the last one. No big deal. -The stuff is slick! Makes it a little more challenging to grab rail (if your into that) with a glove on. A little griptape on the bottom fixes this. Also, the stuff was so slick, that some of the smaller pieces of grip tape I put on had a hard time sticking at first and would slide around. Havent noticed anything catastrophic, but it wouldn't hurt to sand the top a bit to rough it up. -Torsional Rigidity - The board seems to have a little more twist than is usually preferred in a downhill board. However I'm not sure if this is a bad thing yet. Some more testing (alpi) should tell me whether or not this needs to be fixed. If it does, Steve tells me he already has a method for stiffening up the torsional rigidity without adding much more weight. Thats it for now, but I'll be riding it a lot trying to break it and find any shortcomings.

The one in General was an earlier Nano Prototype that has a 3/8" core making the board 7/16" thick. Plus it has the truck wells that help it sit at a 1/4" beneath your feet. I think its the same as the one Jeremy has.

Haven't tested that just yet Spencer. I thought about doing it on purpose yesterday, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I fall a lot though so it'll happen pretty soon I'm sure. Although I've personally hit a Nano blank with a hammer repeatedly and the stuff hardly scratches. So I have high expectations.

Haha. Well, I am the admin, so if I feel its warranted I'll call out the offender. Especially attacks on myself, haha. There's no geneva convention on the intar webz. On another note, I skated the board in the rain last night and was again blown away but the agility it seems to have compared to my birch/glass firefly.

Update. I threw my 77mm (or they used to be)/88a Strikers on the board and took it for a slide/drift session around the lake. I wanted to really test the concave some more. With those harder wheels it obviously ups the vibration on less than perfect surfaces, but thats to be expected. Drifting and sliding felt rad though, and my feet stayed locked in throughout. Even when I'd hit a rough spot mid slide and the board would get all jerky my feet hardly slipped. Stoked!

Does it hold better flex? weight diff? I know its waaayy harder to work with. Idk just thought ide shout these questions out.

well nano is verry strong sence its weved by nanomeaters or what ever it is and from it being soo strong its prefect to use on speedboards sence you can you less layers on the board hence making the board way lighter and stronger im sure you can mess with it to use in carving boards to make it so they keep there flex and what not but hey im no expert on this stuff

On a molecular scale, stronger than diamond and made out of the exact same stuff. Incredibly stiff for the weight. Extremely hard to work with unless you have a contract like Steve does, where he gets it pre-impregnated, so he can just do what he does best; make the boards.

well i think they are even thinner now. they are 1/4" which is hella thin if thats right. i myself am fist on the list for a nano skeeter so that should be hella thin and light being a flexy board. im getting a medium flex. i am so stoked! anyone else on the list for a nano board?

Congrats! Thats gonna be a sweet ride. I rode a proto nano mosquito that Elijah had last Thursday and it felt great. It will probably be 1/4" though. I dont think they will get much thinner than that so as to keep costs down (less nano the thicker the core) and keep strength.

It will most likely be the same, or nearly the same construction as my Firefly. 1/4" birch core sandwiched between 6 layers of CFNT. May be some minor design changes, but thats basically it. I rode a proto Mosquito on Thursday that felt great. The flex is rad. You only feel it when it most counts, in turning and coming out of hard carves.

Just so everyone knows, the "one-off" designs that Dan and Elijah have built are not sanctioned by Insect or available for sale in any way because Steve has not approved them. They're fun projects, but they're not part of the lineup. Steve allows fabricators to experiment with new designs once in a while to kind of reward them for their work, (and to have some fun toys to ride) but just because they exist and you see them at a sesh DOES NOT MEAN they are sanctioned by Insect. They're prototypes that MAY see the light of day sometime, and that's a long shot. Dan has been responsible for some wicked innovations in board designs at Insect over the years, and now that Elijah has a firm grasp on design and production, he's experimenting with his own shapes too, but I repeat, there's NO WAY you're going to order one of these one-off protos from Insect until they've undergone extensive testing and refinement and THEN only if Steve feels like they deserve to be sold. I say all this because I know this is a hot spot for Steve. I'm not weighing in on whether the symmetrical Firefly is cool or not, and I'm not taking sides as to who came up with the shape first, I'm just saying they're one of a kind ideas, and they may never see mass production. And then again, maybe they will, but that's entirely up to Mr. Hopper. Now let's get back to talking about Nano Boards!
Peace. ken

Bump on this thing. I love this board more than ever. Its the only longboard i've skated on since I got it. Used it at the Vancouver Vixen push race and it worked rad. I thought it might get a little tiresome being a topmount and all but it's so light it makes pushing a breeze. Next weekend I took it to Tolt and got around 53mph on it with no problems at all. Seriously, this board can handle it all. Right now its drying in garage nd is splattered with mud and worm guts from 3 days of rain riding. I'm gonna take it to the shoog this weekend and torture it more! -Shane.

I feel very privileged to have just received my first Insect board the Mosquito 38” Drop Through, the board travelled nearly 7,000 miles arrived in perfect condition and delivered in person by Markus an English Longboarder staying with Steve and his Family, try getting service like that from some well known companies? I started skating in 1968, ye Dudes I know I’m old..hahaha.. But the upside is when you get busted on the roads by the feds they ask you to stop, I just plead “old man dementia!”. And nothing is going to stop me rippin up on my Insect. For the first time in many years I have found the fun has come back to skating…So thanxs a bunch Steve and of course all the Guys at Insect HQ. Great site with cool info and chat…..Long Live Insect Skateboards and North West Longboarding. Back to “Peaceful Bombing on my Weapons Grade Insect Longboard” Bye.

Hobbit, Tell Marcus that we all had a pleasure riding with him and Shane! Glad you are stoked on your boards. Most of us here are buddies with Steven or the Insect crew, and we are happy to see his boards being so well received overseas!

Glad you dig the board. They are really coming along. And yeah, that is some damn good service, haha! I'm setting up a new Wasp right now and then gonna go skate it. Can't wait.
