no i thought about that tho its longer which isnt a bad thing but the end is a hill tho kinda defeates the push race aspect but it could also spice it up a bit too

im kinda waiting to see how much interest there is before i go off starting an event that nobody will attend but ill defiantly keep five mile in the venue list as with dock street from the grain elevators to the end of the thea foss.

how long is this road you want to have the race on? keep in mind most push races are more than 5 miles, it'd be a real short event if it only took 20 minutes to do the course..

5 Mile Longboards is a small company in Tacoma would help you out with setting it up and whatnot.

have you made traction or have some inside contacts to get street permits for skateboard push race? most push races i've been in or known of are outlaw. i'd predict it to be near impossible since skateboardings technically illegal most of WA, and because typically permits apply to a very short chunk of road, rather than a long course that winds through many roads or paths.

i'd say go outlaw, and make the course looooooong :-D

I think ruston way would be too short for a push race. I skated the whole thing 3 times one day. If you plan it I will definitely go, just my 2 cents. And go outlaw for sure

Please do this. Try to make sure it's not on the same date as some other longboard event. A Pt. Defiance push race would be epic. Maybe 2 laps to make it longer, or you could start up the hill in Ruston.

If you do a $5 entry fee you could just buy a board or some wheels to give out as a prize. The expense of a set of $40 wheels could be recouped if only 8 people showed up, and I'm sure at least 8 people would show up!

Check with the guys at Northwest Snowboards over on Bridgeport Way; they might be down to give you some gear... at the very least some stickers.

Also I would be willing to help you put it on. I'm on Vashon Island for the summer, but it's a quick ferry ride over to Pt. D.

ok yeah five mile longboards said they couldn't help a ton my next guess was to get nws of allaboard two local skate companies to help. if that fails the entry fee will have to do i'd kinda like to have 3 prizes one for all the podium finishers kinda thing.

oh and one more i was told by five mile not to blow the chambers bay spot and i respect that im leaning toward pt.d on a sunday when no cars will be on it. The five mile guys said the bike trail by cheany stadium that goes all the way to gig harbour skatepark but that seemed a tad too long im not sure on the exact distance tho.

I'm out of town all this week so I'll talk to NWS and allaboard and this one guys from five mile said he could maybe help out but if none of them can help I will just ask entrys to chip in 5 bucks for the winners prize but I would kinda like to have a prize for all top three finishers... im not sure what will end up working out but I'd say two weeks from this sunday is a possible event day if that that then the week after that one.

talked to five mile more seriously at maryhill and they are stoked to help out. they are supplying a board for first prize and possible some other stuff we have to hammer some stuff out still. entry will be five bucks and the money will also go to the winner. one question i want to ask you guys however is which way do you want to ride through five mile? we are doing two laps but should we go with the regular flow of traffic or against it (keep in mind on sundays there are no cars this is more of a reference to know which way im talking about) think that over all get the rest of the details out as soon as i know them.

cars are not allowed saturday and sunday mornings and thas when the race is being held cars are not an issue I'm almost done with the flyer roe racing is throwing a board at me along with the five mile guys so we got two prizes still working on a third. I'll submit the flyer to silverfish but does anyone kow how to get it on the home page of NWLB? that would be cool if I could do that. And ill put them up all over town.

agreed definitely go WITH traffic 100%. that way if someone falls they wont get hit with double the momentum of traffic coming towards you.

First annual Push The Point. 2 laps through Five Mile Drive in Tacoma Washington. Enjoy some faster downhill sections along with flats and uphill sections to give both beginners and pros a chance for competition. $5 to enter, sign up and pay at 9AM race untill everyone has finished. The road is closed to cars during the race, but it is outlaw so ride at your own risk. 1st place wins a Freeride deck from Five Mile Longboards, 2nd wins a Slalom deck from Roe Racing, and 3rd wins a Carving deck from Bentley Longboards. Well I could be biased but I would sandbag for 3rd LOL.
Here is a sneak peak at the board and pics do not do it justice!
Although listed as a carver it is much more of a freeride/ldp (pusher not pumper)
40" X 9.25" drop with concave and a small kick
3/8" Baltic birch with fiberglass top and bottom (Idouble layer around drops)
Deep purple stain with gold leaf trim.
I will post more pics when done, hopefully in the sun. In person you want to go swimming in it. lol

5 mile is darn close to five miles long making the race almost ten miles the last third of each lap is down hill. so it wont be too bad.

the start will be right where pearl street ends and when the angled parking and entrance begin we will exit on the zoo hill (long hill that goes by the zoo parking lot and then begining the next lap.

there will be three check points through out the park that you will need to pass by and recieve a ticket from. so you can't cut from the entrace straight up to for nisqually and things like that. if you dont have all your tickets by the end of the race your not elligable for prizes. sorry cheaters but if we didnt do it that way you coulf cut the ten miles into less than half and that really unfair.

I have always found it funny how many don't wear and gear or think that they
only need this or that to ride. Knee pads, slide gloves and a helmet are a must. I wear my elbow pads and crash pads when sliding. Gear means you can get up and continue to ride/race, not nurse the smallest of road rash.
Not knowing the area, how fast will this push race DH get?

the downhill part can be anywhere from twenty to forty depeding on how hard you push into the hills and how much/how little you carve. We have no waivers which could be a good idea but im hoping we will havbe minimal spills to begin with.

Waivers would definately be a good Idea. The last hill (zoo hill) is pretty easy but theres a speed bump and some can be wierd pavement. Top speed on that is about 40-42. Its chill

Deff need helmets anytime over 25 imo. And since a tight pack can cause a bad situation, if front man falls and takes out the pack. Not your fault but now your down. Will there be good spectator spots, wife dosnt want to go unless she can see stuff.

As far as spectating goes. Theres one good spot that I can think of but you could really only see the start and the beggining of the run and the finish and the main hill that comes down to it. its a nice park though.

It would actually be really cool if we could do like a bbq afterwords like some hotdogs n stuff and get a big sesh in tacoma goin after the race!

The flyer is two posts above the bently board pics. Brek said the best spectating spot but it takes about 45 to 50 minutes for people to do a lap so there could be a lot of down time between watching and not watching. I like the idea of the bbq and session but im not up to set up a bbq so if anyone wants to take initiative on that go for it. If you want to session after (some may not, parts of this race is super tiring) just talk to some other racers and go hit some hills. Good brain storming Brek!

and ya there are a couple decent spots to spectate from, i would guess somewhere safely positioned on nisqually could work, and the zoo hill has a lot of room near the end, grass and such to sit on and watch...

a bbq would be sick, i personally cant say i'd be able to throw something like that together, but id be more than willing to bring some burgers/hotdogs etc. if we did some sort of pot luck, idk just a thought...stoked for the race though!

My vote is to do it at the 5, a couple laps around and the zoo hill to finish it would make it interesting. but definately require helmets, and I can get some guys from lakewood into it i'm sure.

i know what you mean ill be hosting no matter what but racing would be a plus.

A little message to everyone: talk to people you know who are interested in photography or filming so we can get some people out there to make a stellar video of the event ill edit it if people can get the pictures and footage.

Also helmets are required. We are working on a waiver too. We might be a tad lenient on people that haven't read this thread so we get more people out racing but really you shouldn't be dumb enough to ride wthout one. Be sure to give people crap about it on race day if they don't have one

As far as helmets go, you should NOT let anyone race without one. Unless you get EVERYONE to sign a waiver, it becomes your responsibility and if anyone gets injured, you're gonna take some heat. If they don't have a helmet, help them get one, or don't let them race. Like you said, they shouldn't be dumb enough to be skating without one in the first place, but just be adamant about it. A cracked skull would just bring publicity and the popo would crack down on this sort of event more often in the future.

Sorry the flyers were already out after you told me that Dan it was kinda impossible to change at that point. Also the ROE board could be one of there longboards not a slalom deck we are not sure yet.

This is so awesome. I have a large grill I can bring, it plugs in the hitch of my Jeep. Does the park area allow BBQing? I can bring the grill and coals, if others will bring food. It would be cool to have a slalom course/race after the push race, huh? I have some cones.

just drove through the five to scope out a few last minute things each lap is actually 4.7 miles and the downhill combined is about 0.7 miles per lap. still looking for food and video/photo people i can see if the checkpoint people can pitch in with the footy but it wont be great. helmet cams or handhelds for racers would get some good footy so if you got one bring it ill edit a video after the race from everyones stuff. cant wait for the weekend

well there are grills throughout the 5mile too, if someone were just to bring some coals that would work as well. hotdogs are pretty cheap, gettin some of those shouldnt be too hard, even if we have to run to the store real quick after the race.

Just got the board from bently its really sweet. Great craftsmanship and it looks nice and even for fun to ride. small kick tail and a deep concave freeride board for sure. The Roe board is also on the way should have it friday and im pretty sure they donated on of their longboard not one of their slalom ones if that gets anyone stoked. Gareth makes some solid decks ive ridden a few.
